🚨 If you haven’t already, PLEASE consider signing this letter to save Elizabeth Street Garden, or consider donating to their legal fund, PR, Garden maintenance and operations, and free public programs - all in effort to save the Garden. The Garden is a sculpture park nestled between Little Italy and Soho, is completely managed by volunteers, and has been a sanctuary for residents and whoever falls upon it. It breaks my heart knowing they are planning to destroy such a beautiful, timeless piece of history and green space for housing development. Many have been fighting to preserve it for a long time now, and today this New York Times article featured Letters from P.S. 130 Students, in addition to the neighborhood Seniors who have been pleading to Mayor Adams.
D.S. & Durga x Soft Services: a body care collab we didn’t know we needed. Soft Services, a brand entirely dedicated to body care, has a new edition to their cult favorite Microcrystal Exfoliant Buffing Bar with D.S. & Durga’s Debaser fragrance. The Debaser Buffing Bar is a gorgeous shade of purple, smells of their divine blend of fig, coconut milk, and iris, and is available for a limited time only. It’s a summer of collabs for D.S. & Durga, I wonder if it will be at their brick-and-mortar on Mulberry St. I’m not surprised this is the inaugural collaboration for Soft Services, as I have been following one of the co-founders,
for a moment now. She seems to have a special love for fragrance, and would highly recommend checking out her insightful writing on marketing, packaging, copywriting, and so much more.
A moment for Elizabeth Renstrom. The NYC-based photographer, fraghead running Instagram page basenote_bitch, who had her exhibit by the same name at Olfactory Art Keller earlier this year, was the photographer behind Airbnb’s newest Icons adventure, Sleepover at Polly Pocket’s Compact. Actually iconic. The photos are gorgeous and the 90s nostalgia is just killing me. Ugh, those were the days. When life was simple, and your biggest challenge was convincing your mom to get you a Polly Pocket.
Auntie Anne’s is capturing the doughy, nostalgic mall scent in a bottle. They’re releasing a perfume called Knead with notes of “buttery dough, salt, a hint of sweetness, and popping up as New York's “first” Pretzel Parfumerie on August 13 at 433 Broadway in Soho, New York (2PM-7PM). I wonder if Mrs. Fields has thoughts.
I want to hear from New Yorkers. Apparently these 12 Perfumes can help you channel “New York IT Girl Energy.” Spoilers: Caswell Massey, Bowmakers, French Poetry, Replica.
Sniffapalooza, the fragrance enthusiast community that has held many iconic fragrance NYC events for the last 20 years, is having a free virtual Masterclass introducing the Fragrance Alliance Network, a new educational resource in NYC with a melting pot of creators, educators, entrepreneurs, curators and fragrance enthusiasts united by a communal passion for the olfactive arts. It’s exciting to see something like this in NY. I recently took their course, Smell of Power, a French perfume history class, and loved it. You can read about it here.
NYC-based World Taste & Smell Association is having a Global Taste & Smell Summit this September at the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD).
Régime des Fleurs is now at Stéle.
Have y’all smelled Thin Wild Mercury’s NY Collection at ESQUELETO?
Clean Fragrance Brand The 7 Virtues opened their flagship atelier in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Founder Barb Stegemann says she has been dreaming of this moment for 10 years, after starting the brand out of her garage in 2010. The experiential space seems to capture the atmosphere that 7 Virtues embodies: serenity, sleek, minimalist elegance, and beauty with lots and lots of bouquets. My favorite part is that the store invites consumers to create their own bespoke perfumes with guidance from “alchemists,” and Stegemann herself. I’m going to have to build a separate perfume passport at this point so I can visit all the perfume ateliers known to mankind.
Sandalwood for your pup?! Dolce & Gabbana has released a $108 perfume called Fefé for your dog. According to the brand: “Inspired by Domenico Dolce's unconditional love for his loyal dog Fefé, this alcohol-free scented mist for dogs blends fresh and delicate notes of Ylang Ylang, Musk, and Sandalwood. It’s a tender and embracing fragrance crafted for a playful beauty routine.” The response has been rather … bad. Many, especially vets, are not excited about how it may impact your dog’s sniffing power, even if it is alcohol-free. TBH, I am capable of being that person who would purchase, but more for collectable and display purposes. I do like natural essential oil/hydrosol sprays for smelly pups, and this one used to be one of my favorites, especially for dogs with allergies.
TIL about this boutique in Hackensack, NJ that holds a Guinness World Record of the LARGEST Fragrance Collection in the World. And by LARGEST, I don’t mean quantity—I mean size. Businessman and collector Sudhir Gupta owns Facticerie, home to 3,000 perfume factices, which are oversized perfume bottles. Gupta started this collection in 1993, and is preserving the loss art of factices. You visit his shop by making an appointment here. Has anyone been there? I’m going to pay a visit soon.
This reminded me of the Perfume Museum, or Museu del Perfum, I visited in Barcelona this year. It started in 1963, and showcases the evolution of perfume bottles and vessels throughout history and the world. It’s incredible, and includes the smallest solid perfume tins you’ve ever seen, ancient scent artifacts, and also extra large factices of iconic perfumes. I will dedicate a newsletter soon to the museum and the other gorgeous perfume concept store I visited in Granada.
Things That Made Me LOL
- of thousand wrote a chuckling piece on Cleopatra’s perfume. I would love to explore/write a little more about the allure behind our obsession with ancient scents, especially those worn by powerful historical figures.
Although Charli XCX’s lime green ‘brat’ aesthetic has been everywhere the last couple weeks—apparently this Byredo perfume is one of her favorites—and very anti-brat.
I love this Notes + Emotions post by Binaurale Fragrances. Ambroxan is killing me. Genius.
I have also been loving this DIY Apothecary Kitchen by Baker/Author Helena Garcia. Someone let this woman design a perfume/bakery hybrid store.
